Northport, in Port Klang, Malaysia, celebrates yet another significant win this year with the 2009 Human Resources Ministry HR Development Award under the category Major Employer (Services Sector) and a reaffirmation of its commitment to human capital development as a key to its success a major global port.
The HR Development Award is the country’s leading event for recognition of leadership and benchmark Human Resource practice. Organized annually by the Pembangunan Sumber Manusia Berhad (PSMB), the award recognizes excellence across the entire spectrum of the Human Resource.
The Managing Director/CEO of Northport (Malaysia) Bhd, Dato’ Basheer Hassan Abdul Kader, in welcoming the Award, said as a service-related company, Northport places very high importance on human capital development to ensure service levels offered by the port meet exacting global standards.
“We are a global port serving the needs of more than 100 global shipping lines which connect Northport to more than 300 ports worldwide and the expectation is very high on the delivery standards and performance levels which cannot be achieved unless you have well trained and dedicated workforce as we have in Northport,” said Datuk Basheer Hassan.
Northport which has 2,700 experienced employees has maintained very high standards in HR practice and the Award reaffirms the position of Northport as a leading organization which strives for excellence and achievement.
Dato’ Basheer Hassan said in view of the heavy responsibility placed on the port workers, Northport gives considerable importance to retraining and skills upgrading of its employees to increase the contemporary knowledge and skill intensity of the workforce. In this respect it has invested in sophisticated simulators and a huge training budget.
“We have a very dynamic human resources development programme which aims to equip our employees with specialized and up-to-date skills especially since businesses are becoming more competitive and demanding,” he added.

The Human Resources Minister HR Development Awards 2009 was held on the 13th of October 2009 at the Sunway Pyramid Convention Centre.
Northport has also won the 2009 Frost & Sullivan Award for “Best Multi-Purpose Terminal Operator of the Year”, the 2009 ASFCA Award for “The Best Asia Container Terminal Award (under 4 mil TEUs)” and is shortlisted for the 2009 Lloyd’s List Asia Awards under the category “Container Terminal Operator of the Year”.
